What the pitch format quietly rewards
A pitch competition rewards novelty, confidence and narrative. Those are real skills. They are also close to uncorrelated with whether a business works. Test it for almost nothing

Do the arithmetic before the branding
What must this charge, and how many customers does it need, simply to pay one person? Most student ventures fail this test immediately. Doing the sum early is not discouragement — it redirects effort towards ideas where the numbers can work.
Rehearse rejection as information
Rejection in entrepreneurship is constant and mostly impersonal. The skill is extracting the reason and deciding whether it invalidates the assumption or merely reflects the wrong customer. Students who take every no as a verdict on themselves stop after three.
Practise changing your mind in public
The hardest move for a student is standing up and saying the idea they championed last week does not survive contact with evidence. Make this an explicitly high-status act — the one that earns the best marks — and the culture of the whole activity changes.
A format that teaches the right thing
Replace the single pitch with two checkpoints. At the first, teams present their riskiest assumption and how they intend to test it cheaply. At the second, they present what they found and what they changed as a result. The final assessment weighs the quality of the test and the honesty of the conclusion, not the appeal of the idea.
Teams that abandoned an idea for good reasons should be able to score highest. Once students believe that is true, they start doing genuine investigation rather than defending a position they adopted in week one.
